Harder Than I Thought

This blogging thing is certainly more difficult than I anticipated. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying it but the more I learn the more I discover I don't have a clue.

I'm not happy with the title of my journal. Jack's Journal. Yes, it's very 'does what it says on the tin' but I don't feel it fits and I don't know what else to call it. How do I go about choosing a name for this thing? Something that reflects who I am and what I'm writing about.

I'm mostly happy with the layout. I think. I like it enough but again I'm not entirely sure it reflects me same as the name.

Topics to post about. I have no idea what makes an interesting post. I'm pretty sure though that 'Today I took the dog for a walk, read my book, watched some TV, ate dinner, had great sex, went to bed' isn't exactly exciting. I do read a lot and thought about maybe writing reviews but I have no idea how to write a book review.

So this is where I ask for your advice: How do I come up with a better name and how do I know what to write about?

I started off on LiveJournal back in February 2004, bounced around with a few different names until spring 2006 or so. My title ("wasting words on lowercases and capitals") and subtitle ("a failed attempt to capsulize a feeling") are both stolen song lyrics - I feel like I write a lot without everreally saying anything though, so those titles work for me =)

Give it some time, you'll find something that's a good fit eventually. You just need to settle in and hit your stride.

This was very helpful, thank you. I've definitely got a name I prefer. Whether it's my final one I dont know, but it feels more me and it makes me smile

It took me a long time to come up with a title I was happy with. It'll come to you when you least expect it.

As for the layout, dreamwidthlayouts may be of interest to you.

Topics . . . write about what you want to write about! If you were going to write a book review, you could maybe review the wording/writing style, the characterization (assuming fiction), plot, foreshadowing, what you liked and didn't like, etc.

I dunno. I'm not very good at suggestions on this sort of thing! Sorry!

As for topics, write about whatever strikes your fancy. There isn't any set formula for what people write about. The best entries are the ones that are from the heart.

Names are harder to figure out.
