Flying To The Stars

Yesterday, Spotify recommended me a Good Morning Jazz playlist. It kind of baffled me because I don't listen to jazz and it's not a genre of music I know anything about. I mentioned it to both Lucy & Samantha and they both turned their noses up, Samantha also offering a disgusted look.

I had a quick google and the internet told me that

Jazz is a musical art form which originated around the beginning of the 20th century in Black communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions. The style's West African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, call-and-response, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and the swung note of ragtime.

Now I do like some big band and swing, and had no idea it originated from jazz so I decided to give the playlist a listen. After all, the worst that could happen is that I didn't like it and turned it off again.

Instead, I spent a couple of relaxed hours, with my newspaper and a wordsearch, listening to and falling in love with jazz. It's definitely something I'm going to look more into but so far I'm finding myself enjoying the 'cool jazz' sub-genre.
